The Barbie Bandit Case
Four Defendants, Three Prison Sentences
Two young women, a criminal "mastermind," and an inside co-conspirator, grainy videotape of the heist, the media nickname "Barbie Bandits," a car chase and arrests two days later.
It was a made-for-TV type of criminal case. Unlike television bank robberies, however — the consequences facing my client were very real, and the odds of avoiding serious prison time were not good.
Complicating matters was the media coverage. See video Guilty Plea in Barbie Bandit Case
One Barbie Bandit Received Probation
Of the four defendants in the Barbie Bandit case, only one was not sentenced to serve time in prison. That one was my client.
In a case like this one, a case where avoiding conviction is not realistic — you have to be able to shift your focus as a defense lawyer away from fighting and toward making the law, the system and the media work for your client.
When you have a client who is willing to take your advice, this is much easier to accomplish. Even so, the quality and effectiveness of that advice is largely dependent on your experience as an attorney.
After nearly 20 years working in Georgia's criminal justice system, including several years as a prosecutor — I have learned how to use my experience working criminal cases from both sides to my clients' advantage. I did it for a Barbie Bandit and have done the same thing for many less publicized clients as well.
Given the opportunity — I promise to work as hard as I can to do the same for you.
